#11 Lent and Ramadan: Financial Lessons

Fr. Kiibi described lent as a wonderful period to learn and avoid committing crimes against money. It is not the money you earn that is not enough but it’s your knowledge that is not enough. He emphasized that ignorance kills more people than dangerous diseases. All of us are born to be rich or wealthy but not all of us will be wealthy for 4 reasons: 1) Tendency of consumerism—any money earned is all spent with nothing saved or invested: 2) Tendency of entitlement—my parents, government, employer and so forth must give me this and that or I am an orphan or disadvantaged. 3) materialism —to appear rich when you are actually poor. 4) Ignorance — not knowing, not knowing that you don’t know and not wanting to know.

Nasser Jjumba described Ramadan as a period to bond, reflect and act differently. He said “A fool with his money will soon depart,” “money is a doubles game” “if you have 9 poor people and you add 1 rich person, they may all become poor but when you have 9 rich people and you add 1 poor person, you may have 10 rich people,” “many people are wasteful” and much more.
